Avery has a unique opportunity to experience one of the finest pianos Steinway has ever produced, the Model A III. The A3 or the Stretch A was built for a very short period of time, only from 1913 to 1945. The 6'4" A3 was the largest of the A's produced and manufactured from the New York factory. As the Steinway A grew in size, so did the instrument's power, sound, and performance.
Smaller than model B, the A3 is one of the most coveted Steinway grand pianos. The scale design that created one of the best-sounding pianos in the world is why the A III has this robust and dominating presence.
The Scale was designed and introduced by Theodore Steinway, an innovative legend of Steinway. His contributions to grand piano design paved the way for Steinway grand pianos to be the most dominating pianos in the world. The innovative design of the bent rim case construction allowed for a better transfer of soundboard vibrations throughout the piano.
The perfect piano was in jeopardy of being dethroned, as the A3 had some unique advantages for the homeowner. The piano had a smaller footprint without sacrificing power, sound, and performance. With the development of the new scale design, the sound of the III was actually preferred to the B, which caused an issue with Steinway's model lineup, eventually leading to production being halted.
The A3 we have was rebuilt roughly 20 years ago with a new pin block, strings, pins, and soundboard. The piano has a unique presence that differentiates it from its brothers. The action is smooth and responsive, and the sound can be described as powerful, with deep, rich, low-end, and crystal-clear highs.
