I bought my Mason & Hamlin CC2, 9’ (feet) Concert Grand piano in 2000 and never regretted my decision. The serial number is 65971 and its year of manufacturing was 1960. Now some twenty-four years after my date of acquisition (2024), because of my age (88), I must plan to move into an apartment, and I know for a fact that I cannot bring the piano with me because of space restrictions.

The piano was in excellent shape when I bought it. But I had some complete restoration work done on it to get it to the highest standard possible. The piano was repainted in satin ebony black to give it a fresher look even though it did not really need it. I had the hammers replaced with a set of Abel hammers which have been replaced since (five years ago) with a set of Renner hammers. The piano was fully restrung, tuned, voiced and regulated. The action was brought back to its original M&H specifications. Over the years, the piano was serviced, tuned on a regular basis and regulated as required by the best technicians in Ottawa. I have an appointment for this year’s tuning. The humidity of the piano was kept to its optimal level thanks a Damp-Chaser installed under its structure. Overall, the piano is in impeccable shape. I have a piano technician appraisal of the piano for 85,000$.

The Mason & Hamlin is probably the best built piano in the world. It is the only piano fitted with
the Mason & Hamlin Tension Resonator System also known as the Crown Retention System which provides an extraordinary level of stability to the piano. The spider looking metal system installed underneath the soundboard designed and patented for Mason & Hamlin by Richard W. Gertz in 1900 allows the piano to better maintain its crown because it supports the rim of the piano and keeps it from expanding and contracting in different weather conditions; creating much more stability for the piano. Furthermore, Mason & Hamlin pianos have massively built inner and outer rims that further enhance the longevity of soundboard crown. This is why many older Mason & Hamlin pianos still produce vibrant sound for years when other pianos lose their energy of tone.

I know it will break my heart to see my M&H go, but I will be comforted at the idea of seeing it in good hands of people who will enjoy it and take good loving care of it. I see this piano as a showpiece and as a practical instrument of choice in a large auditorium, in a church environment, in any musical institution, or in large living room.

As a testimonial of the quality of this piano, please listen to a piece recorded a few years back available on You Tube: Go to You Tube, type '9 Ft Grand Mason & Hamlin Ottawa' and listen to Chopin Scherzo, no 2.

Two testimonies on the quality of the Mason & Hamlin :
French music composer Maurice Ravel chose Mason & Hamlin pianos for his first tour of America. Of them he said: “While preserving all the qualities of the percussion instrument, the Mason & Hamlin pianoforte also serves magnificently the composer’s concept by its extensive range in dynamics, as well as quality of tone. It is not short of being a small orchestra. In my opinion, the Mason & Hamlin is a real work of art.”

"Among all pianos, none compares with the Mason & Hamlin in beauty and grace of tone, or in mellowness and softness and yet in bigness, or in anything that a sensitive and, as it were, human piano should have." Yehudi Menuhin (Menuhin had five Mason & Hamlin grand pianos in his West Coast home).
