Circa 1891 Semi-Ornate Steinway Grand Model A in satin ebony finish. 6' 2" long. Classic Original Period Style scrollwork music desk and carved/turned legs. Piano has been comprehensively rebuilt/restored and refinished. Action is very responsive and tone quality is amazing. Keytops are the original ivories and ebonies from 1891, and are in excellent condition. (See photos.) Original Steinway factory soundboard has lots of power and projection, has good crown/curvature, and still sounds as good as the day it came out of the factory. The piano's pinblock was replaced in the relatively recent rebuild, for another 75-100 years of tuning stability. Unlike other Model A's of this period that have been "modernized" with modern style spade legs, pedal lyre, and music desk, this piano has its original factory legs, pedal lyre, music desk and leaf, and lids, and is truly a museum piece in all respects. (See photos.) But in spite of being an authentic, stunning period piece from the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, the other really nice thing about this piano is that it plays and sounds very much like a modern Steinway. This is because of two factors: 1) by 1891 the technology and design of Steinway grands had pretty much attained what were to be the characteristics of the modern piano, and 2) this piano has been restrung, and the action has been rebuilt, with the absolute highest quality Renner "German Steinway" hammers and action parts (i.e. the same source of the action parts Steinway is using today. Steinway recently bought the Renner factory in Stuttgart, Germany in order to continue to provide Steinways with the highest quality action parts). So in that way, you really get the best of both worlds.
At any rate, this is truly a phenomenal instrument and really has a gorgeous sound and touch. Must see, hear, and experience to appreciate.
